A DERRYMAN who complained when an American publisher produced a book about Ireland but excluded the whole of the North was told it wasn’t included because it’s British.
Jimmy Jennings says a book produced by ABDO Publishing in the States called ‘Ireland’ only looks at Republic.
“Like many others, I have American relatives, and one of my cousins in particular is a librarian in America. She has drawn my attention to this book which is entitled “Ireland” and is being published by ABDO Publishing,” Jimmy told Derry Daily.
“This book is part of a series known as “Explore the countries” and is widely used in the American education system. However my issue lies with the front cover of the book. If you look at the map of Ireland in the top corner of the book, ABDO have taken it upon themselves to omit the entirety of Northern Ireland. When both myself and my cousin challenged them on the fact that this book is entitled “Ireland” yet only gives the section of the landmass where the ROI is situated, their response was that Northern Ireland is a part of the United Kingdom and therefore does not need to be represented.
“Whilst I realise that this fact is correct, I do not see how they can omit Northern Ireland whilst describing the history of Ireland seeing as the histories of both countries are intertwined.”
