SDLP Councillor Mark O’Donnell has called on to parents consider the potential danger in buying scramblers and quads as gifts for Christmas.
Cllr O’Donnell told Derry Daily: “There has been a long history of anti-social behaviour involving quads and scramblers within the Shantallow ward and across the city as a whole.
“Some people may be unaware that use of scramblers and quads is only legal on private land with the landlords’ permission.
“The danger posed both to riders and to the public by these machines is considerable.
“They can cause very serious injury and in some circumstances death which is the last thing anybody wants to deal with at Christmas time.
“Anyone who wishes to use a quad bike responsibly must receive appropriate training and always wear a helmet.
“A quads capabilities and responses often vary due to weather, terrain, load and speed.
“I would urge parents to seriously reconsider purchasing these machines as a gift.”
