THE PSNI is investigating a serious sexual assault on a girl in Derry.
There is a possibility the girl may have been drugged before the assault.
The incident in Carnhill has prompted a public statement from local MLA Pat Ramsey who has cautioned families about being vigilant when out in Derry.
“I have been asked by a family to warn and advise young girls in a Derry not to be out on their own after a most serious sexual assault took place last night,” said Mr Ramsey.
“The circumstances are still being investigated as the young girl involved may have been given drugs.
“If you are out at night make sure you have a friend or family member along with you,” said the former city mayor.
The incident comes just days after the PSNI issued a public warning, revealing there had been 17 serious sex assaults in the North West in recent months.
The warning also offered advice for women attending social functions over the Christmas period.
