amazonBREAKING NEWS: A DERRY company has had to apologise after its computer software re-priced items worth tens of thousands of pounds for just 1p on the Amazon website.

RepricerExpress, based on the Strand Road, uses software to optimise sales for businesses on the world’s biggest retailer website.

And it certainly increased sales – when thousands of items were incorrectly listed at 1p each.

The glitch that allowed certain customers to buy products for just one penny on its site.

The software adjusts the cost of items to make them cheaper than others….but not this much cheaper.

“Glitches can happen in e-commerce just as they can in any business, and it was probably found out very quickly and resolved, ” said retail expert Dan Wagner.

“But in that small window, the lucky consumers who went online and bought some expensive products really have the right to keep them.”

One retailer says that the problem has cost her tens of thousands of pounds. However Amazon has now agreed to fund the retailers.

The glitch affected prices between 7pm and 8pm on Friday, and involved firms who use RepricerExpress.

On its website, the software company promises to “auto-optimise” prices on behalf of retailers, allowing them to “sell more and keep listings competitive 24/7 without constant attention”.

Family-run businesses like baby clothes outlet Kiddymania took to social media to express their own concerns. On Facebook, the company said they had “been hit badly” by “the 1p Amazon/Repricer Express software issue”. “Support kiddymania and help us through this,” it added.

In a statement on the RepricerExpress website, the company apologised to retailer Sam Burnell, who complained that “we’ve sold thousands of pounds worth of goods for zero!!!”.

Derry man Brendan Doherty, the RepricerExpress CEO, said: “I am truly sorry for the distress this has caused our customers.

“We have received communication that Amazon will not penalise sellers for this error. We are continuing to work to identify how this problem occurred and to put measures in place to ensure that it does not happen again.”
