Derry schools’ renowned ability to delivery high standards will be severely impacted by the adoption of the draft education budget, SDLP MLA Colum Eastwood has said.
Mr Eastwood said: “Sinn Fein and the DUP have failed to provide a workable education budget. The end result is unacceptable financial pressures being forced on schools which have nothing left to cut.
“During a series of meetings with union representatives, school principals, teachers, parents and pupils in Derry, I have listened to grave concerns over the severe impact of the proposed cuts on education standards in our schools. None of us can see how education can be delivered to even an acceptable standard with the level of funding proposed.
“The SDLP is working to ensure any new education budget protects frontline services in our schools. The draft education budget has left schools facing a resource funding gap of £162m which will squeeze teaching posts and the ability to deliver the highest standards of education which Derry and the wider North is renowned for.
“The SDLP was the only party to vote against the budget cuts drawn up by the DUP and Sinn Fein. Our party is now forensically examining the draft education budget and making every effort to re-prioritise savings to ensure frontline services in education are protected.
“The value of education cannot be underestimated. We are all dependent on the growth of a knowledge based economy. It is vital that there are no financial barriers to education for our young people.”
