Strabane Sinn Féin Cllr Jay Mc Cauley says plans announced by Council to develop a Multi-Sport 3G or 4G pitch at Melvin Sports Complex is the culmination of a process of discussions and meetings with local sporting groups on how to address the lack of a local facility of adequate standard an in particular one capable of hosting competitive games.
The local councillor, who has been involved in discussions with Strabane Athletic FC, Strabane Rugby Club and the Athletics Club to try and find a way to cater for their needs said today: “The plans announced by Council for a 3G or 4G pitch Melvin facility hopefully represent the solution to addressing the long-standing problems our local soccer and rugby clubs have been enduring in frequently not being able to secure a playable pitch (often because of vandalism) and not having a pitch of adequate standard capable of hosting competitive games.
“The lack of such a facility was amply illustrated in January this year when Strabane Athletic were drawn at home to Ballinamallard in the Irish Cup but had to play the fixture away from home because no local pitch was of adequate standard.
“Within Council, we have been working hard to ensure that this issue be addressed as a legacy project in this the final term of Strabane District Council and work is well underway in an effort to secure the necessary funding to create this shared 3G or 4G multi-disciplinary sport facility which caters for the pressing needs of our local sporting clubs and which adds greatly to the excellent facilities available to our local schools and wider community in the District.”
