THE big-hearted people of Derry have to the rescue of a 79-year-old man forced to leave his home after the death of his partner.
His partner’s family told him he was merely a ‘guest’ at the property – and promptly evicted him.
Social services were called in but the man’s only possessions were a radio and a small TV. He was told he couldn’t get help with furnishings for his new flat.
However local people have now stepped in to help.
MLA Pat Ramsey had helped.
“This city is full of wonderful people, what a magnificent response to the gentleman facing homelessness coming up to Christmas,” said Mr Ramey.
“It was overwhelming the amount of genuine, decent friends coming forward with furniture, electrical items, bedding, food hampers, fuel and money, to every single one of you be I am very proud of you and thank you sincerely.”
He added: “When you are least expecting it a favour and reward will come you way sometime soon.”
