POLICE are investigating after a 50-year-old woman was attacked in the Creggan area of Derry.
The attack happened as she was walking in a laneway between Creggan Heights and Ballymagowan at around 8.40 pm on Friday night.
A man approached her and police said during a struggle she suffered a cut to her nose.
Police said enquiries were at an early stage and a motive had yet to be established.
They appealed for anyone with information to contact them at Strand Road PSNI station on the 101 non-emergency number
SDLP MLA for the Foyle are Pat Ramsey condemned the attack.
He described it as “vicious” and “brutal” and, said her injuries were more serious.
“The woman was using a local laneway when she was attacked and has sustained cuts to her face and head,” he said.
“This was a terrifying and savage assault that has had a profound impact on the victim and her family.
“This is a laneway often used by local people, and especially children.
“Those behind the attack are brutal thugs who have no regard for the people they hurt nor for this community,” added the MLA>
