ROADS SERVICE gritting lorries have been deployed in Derry this evening after temperatures fell below freezing.
Derry is set to escape the worst of the wintry weather, with the north of England and eastern counties of the North seeing snow.
However the PSNI has advised motorists in the North West to slow down.
Following this afternoon’s rain, sleet and snow, temperatures will fall this evening allowing ice to form on untreated surfaces,” said a spokesman.
“Showers arriving during the night, with snow on hills, will allow temperatures to rise somewhat, though they will locally dip again at times, prolonging the risk of localised icy patches into Saturday morning. The public should be aware of this wintry hazard.”
It’s understood icy roads were to blame for the death today of 37-year-old Daniel Morris in Co Fermanagh.
He died after a collision near Fivemiletown.
People planning to travel by air to Britain over the next few days are being warned to check with their airlines.
Liverpool airport was closed this evening following heavy snow.
The Met office has upgraded its cold weather alert to Level 3 amber, the second highest, saying there was a 90 percent chance of severe cold, ice or snow in parts of England between Boxing Day and New Year’s Eve.
