MLA URGES PEOPLE TO CHECK ON ELDERLY NEIGHBOURS

Pat Ramsey MLA

SDLP MLA Pat Ramsey has asked people to be mindful of those who may be lonely or need assistance this time of year in Derry.

Age NI has stated that 70% of older people worry most about staying warm in winter.

Almost a third of older people in the North say that television is their main form of company and 44% of older people feel more isolated from their local communities than ever before.

Pat said: “Christmas is about spending time with family and friends but for many older people it can be a very lonely and difficult time. Adverse conditions and cold weather can exacerbate medical conditions and increase financial burdens.

“Not only can this stop them from leaving their house and hamper their ability to perform everyday tasks but will also make it difficult for them to maintain contact with others.

“I would ask everyone to be mindful of their older neighbours who may appreciate assistance or company this time of year.

“Offering to pick up extra groceries or ensuring their heating is functioning properly are constructive steps that can be taken to ensure an older neighbour feels safe, comfortable and part of the community.

“Christmas and New Year is a time for everyone to feel happy and no one should have to spend it alone.”
