SDLP Councillor Brian Tierney has urged parents to ensure that their children are fully trained and aware of the risks of using Scramblers and Quads this winter. The safety of their children and others are at risk if they fail to take the correct safety precautions.
He said: “I have heard reports of parents bringing their children to Ballyarnett County Park to ride their scramblers and quads. There have been reports that some of the quad and scrambler users are a danger to themselves and to others using the park.
“I am currently working on getting more patrols by Park Rangers to help ensure the safety of everyone using the park.
“I am urging extra precaution in light of the icy weather conditions which we are currently facing. Quads and Scramblers will be much more difficult to control in these conditions.
“I call on parents to remind their children to be mindful of all users of the Country Park and to keep everyone’s safety in mind.
“Parents must ensure that their children understand both the legal issues and safety requirements of quads and scramblers before they let their children use the vehicles.”
Councillor Tierney added: “It is important to remember that quads and scramblers can only legally be used on private property with the permission of the landowner. Anyone wishing to use a quad bike responsible must receive appropriate training and always wear a helmet.”
