MLA Maeve McLaughlin has encouraged people to register to become organ donor as a New Year’s resolution.
The chair of the Assembly’s health committee said today: “It’s a good time of the year to remind people of the need to sign up and register to become organ donors.
“Each year too many people die on organ transplant waiting lists simply because there are not enough donors.
“While the campaign to encourage people to become donors has increased in recent times, more than 80 per cent of people remain unregistered.
“And on occasion those who have registered have not talked their decision over with their families and as a result, their loved ones are unaware of their decision.
“Organs can only be harvested with the permission of a person’s relatives. So it is vitally important that family members are aware of someone’s decision to become an organ donor.
“So as well as signing up to become an organ donor I would encourage people to have a discussion about organ donation with their loved ones.
“I would encourage as many people as possible to make it their New Year’s resolution to register to become donors and give the gift of life to someone else.”
