SDLP Councillor Brian Tierney has reiterated his support for the workers of Firstsource Solutions in Derry following a meeting with employees and TUC representatives.
Mr Tierney, who worked for the call centre company for a number of years, said: “I have met with a number of Firstsource employees and trade union representatives today and it is clear that the extremely pressurised working conditions are totally unacceptable.
“Workers and their families are suffering a great deal of anxiety. Having been employed by the company myself prior to joining Derry City Council, I have a lot of sympathy for the workers.
“Firstsource Solutions is one of Derry’s largest employers and the company recently announced strong financial growth across its sites with PAT growth of £6.4m. This success has not been reflected in its treatment of its Derry workers. Job creation west of the Bann is unsustainable without fair and decent working conditions.
“The SDLP fully supports the workers and will continue to fight for better working conditions. I call upon Firstsource Solutions to recognise the trade unions and to make better provision for the unions to support their employees.”
He added: “My colleagues and I will be attending the HR hearings that will take place next week and I would urge any employee requiring assistance or advice to contact me at the office of SDLP MLA, Colum Eastwood, or any of the SDLP Foyle constituency offices.”
