SDLP activists took to the streets of the city tonight to aid elderly residents and those with disabilities overcome treacherous weather conditions.
Charlie Douglas, SDLP Youth secretary, said “The Party was contacted about the impact treacherous conditions was having on the elderly and disabled residents in the Brook Street Area.
“Many residents in this area are unable to lay the grit themselves and given the steepness of the street, it meant many feared even leaving their front step to get to a nearby car.
“Tonight after we ensured the road was gritted by roads service, we laid salt on the street pavements and steps, as well as the lane way used by children going to the nearby school to ensure everyone in the area would be able to get about their business tomorrow should the bad weather continue.
“It is extremely important that we all look out for our neighbours in times of crisis, particularly those who are not able to do simple tasks such as this. I am delighted we could help in some small way tonight. I would urge everyone to look out for the elderly and those living with a disability in particular.”
