Cars have been abandoned in many areas including in Rosemount where there gridlock.
Transport NI says gritting lorries will continue to work through the night to clear roads but more snow and ice is expected.
Temperatures in rural areas have already fallen to -5C according to a Derry Daily reader outside Ardmore.
