Derry City striker Rory Patterson has agreed to leave Derry City and has had the remainder of his contract cancelled.
Patterson is one of the best players in the League of Ireland and is regarded as the best finisher in the country.
However, because of Derry’s current financial difficulties they were keen to get him off the wage bill as he commanded a considerable salary.
He was transfer listed by the club last month, but Patterson said he’d sit out his contract if he didn’t get a better deal elsewhere.
However, this morning Patterson and club officials came to a mutual agreement and they terminated his contract with immediate effect.
Patterson has been linked with a return to Linfield, but it is also thought that Stephen Kenny is keen on acquiring the services of the talented Strabane man.
His departure is a blow to Derry who look likely to lose Michael Duffy to Celtic, while Patrick McEleney is also on trial at Championship side Brentford.
