The Mayor of Derry Councillor Brenda Stevenson is calling on people to support a sponsored walk event being organized to raise money for a very special cause.
Money raised will benefit a former Guildhall staff member and long serving employee of Derry City Council recently diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease.
Speaking ahead of the walk, which will take place on Wednesday January 21, Cllr Stevenson said: “I hope that people will come out to support the walk, as the money raised will go towards such a good cause, adapting a home for someone who is suffering from an extremely debilitating disease.
“The cost of providing even the most basic facilities is a significant one to anyone coming to terms with living with motor neurone disease, a condition that could affect any of us. I know the funds will make a huge difference to a local family, and I hope we can all rally to offer whatever support we can.”
The starting point for the walk is Guildhall Square and participants will leave at 6.15pm, walking along the quay and over Craigavon Bridge before travelling along the Railway Station footpath, and through Ebrington Square, leading to the Peace Bridge.
Once walkers have crossed the Peace Bridge, they will be greeted at the Riverside Entrance to the Guildhall, where tea/coffee and tray bakes will be served in the Whittaker Suite.
Anyone interested in taking part should pick up a ‘Team Joe’ Sponsorship Form asking for a minimum sponsorship of £5. This will then include entry into a Prize Draw which includes meal vouchers, beauty vouchers, movie-bowl vouchers, hand-crafted painting, and gifts provided by the Mayor.
All proceeds in aid of ‘Team Joe’ and your support and generosity will be greatly appreciated, and everyone is urged to offer their support. Sponsorship forms and monies will be collected by Guildhall Staff, in the Whittaker Suite, on return from sponsored walk. If you would like to take part, please send an email to[email protected]
