Derry City’s new captain Ryan McBride has spoken of his pride at leading his home town club.
McBride, 25, has been a rock in the defence for over 120 appearances for the Candystripes scoring 10 goals in the process.
“I think he epitomises everything you want in a Derry City captain. He’s a local and very much committed player,” said manager Peter Hutton.
“He’ll go through a brick wall for you, sometimes literally! He looks after himself, he’s a great role model for the younger players around the team and he’s Derry City through and through.
“So I think it’ll be a great addition to this season and one that he himself is now looking forward to as well and that bit of added responsibility will do him no harm.
“I consulted with a few people about the decision. I spoke to Gerard Doherty, who was very much in contention for the role and Gerard agreed with me that this was a great opportunity for Ryan to progress and develop as a player, so we’re delighted that he’s accepted the captaincy.”
Said Ryan: “For starters I’d like to thank Peter for this opportunity, I won’t let him down. It’s fantastic! I’ve been going to the Brandywell for years as a supporter and it’s been a dream come true for me to just play for Derry never mind captain them.”
Having started pre-season training with the squad on Friday, he was full of hope for the season ahead.
“We have a great team of players there for this season and we’re all raring to go, so hopefully we’ll do well and the supporters will get behind us,” he added.
