THE boyfriend of a Derry woman who died from cervical cancer after being refused a smear test has called on the public to back the campaign for a change in policy.
Sorcha Glenn was 23 when she died of cervical cancer last October. Tests are only given to women over 25.
Pat Ramsey MLA has been pressing Health Minister Jim Wells to change policy; but yesterday Derry Daily revealed that Mr Wells has refused to do so, citing medical evidence.
Sorcha died in the arms of her long-term boyfriend Matt Lynch.
Sorcha first visited her GP surgery in June 2013 – she asked for an early smear test after being worried about her family history of cervical cancer – but she was refused due to being under the age of 25.
Matt has called on people to sign a petition set up by the Glenn family to have procedures changed.
“Cervical cancer might be rare, doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen though,” said Matt
“It’s becoming more and more common. I would ask people to sign our petition. The current system is a disgrace.”
