Sinn Féin Health spokesperson and Foyle MLA Maeve McLaughlin has said if GP services are to be protected then health minister Jim Wells must produce a strategy, which allows resources to be targeted towards care in the community.
Ms. McLaughlin said,“I understand the concerns of recruiting and holding on to General Medical Practitioners and ensuring GP services are maintained to the current level.
“In order to do so the minister must invest in the service and ensure adequate resources are targeted towards the area.
“GPs provide the first line in terms of dealing with illness in the community and we need to encourage more doctors to become GPs.
“If we have a properly-resourced GP service then it will take pressure of the acute services, which are under tremendous pressure and see better health outcomes in our communities.
