THERE is growing anger at the rising number of car crime incidents across Derry.
Communities have reported a spate of car thefts, break-ins and so-called ‘joyriding’.
The PSNI is now investigating more than 20 incidents in the last seven days – and they’re just the ones being reported.
A car was burnt out in Foyle Springs yesterday; in another incident in Pine Trees thieves smashed their way into a taxi and stole everything inside including a Sat Nav.
Sinn Féin Councillor Eric McGinley has expressed concern at the recent spate of car crime in the city
Cllr. McGinley said: “Over the past number of days there have been a number of car crime incidents which have caused great concern to residents in the affected areas.
“A car was burned out in Foyle Springs just last night after careering through the Ballymagroarty estate and this followed on from a similar incident where a car was destroyed in close proximity to Holy Family Primary School at the weekend.
“There have been other incidents of so-called joy riding in recent times and residents are rightly worried that someone will be seriously harmed by the actions of the reckless individuals involved in these car crimes.
“It is vitally important that we identify and hold to account those responsible and I would encourage residents to provide us with any information which will assist us in removing these criminals from our streets.”
