ALMOST 400 workers at controversial Derry company Firstsource have expressed an interest in joining a union after all 90 workers were cleared of any wrongdoing in an internal investigation.
Officials from the Communications Workers Union (CWU) visited the First Source call-centre to talk to workers.
It followed a series of stories on Derry Daily – and a large numbers of workers – at least 90 – suspended by the company. Now those suspensions have been lifted and the workers cleared of any wrongdoing.
Gerry Robertson, Regional Organiser said “The workers were certainly glad to see us with almost 400 information packs handed out in 40 minutes.
“They are without doubt in need of trade union representation to improve their basic working conditions”
Lawrence C.Huston CWU Regional Secretary for Northern Ireland; said: “There is no doubt the workers in First Source need the protection of a trade union. Recent events would surely been prevented with a bit of sensible dialogue.
“We now call on all First source workers to join the CWU and organise within this high profile call-centre company (with bases in Derry & Belfast)”
“To Firstsource management we send a simple message, ‘engage with the CWU and help us work towards improving the working
environment for everyone in Firstsource’.
“The workforce in Derry has made a major contribution to the company’s success and have every right to be treated with dignity and respect.”
The climbdown by the company is being welcomed by staff.
“We just want to be able to work in a good environment where we are treated with respect,” said one of the whistleblowers who first contacted Derry Daily.
“The unions have been brilliant; we couldn’t have taken this on without them.”
