BREAKING NEWS: AN 11-year-old County Derry girl was the subject of online grooming by a paedophile, a mayor has warned.
Limavady’s first citizen Alan Robinson issued a public warning this evening to all parents about the incident after being asked to do so by the parents of the child.
“I woke this morning with a disturbing report from a local parent, telling me that his 11-year-old child had been targeted by a groomer online,” said Cllr Robinson
“He says that the matter’s now in the hands of the police and is being investigated.”
The mayor said the parent of the child had “pleaded with me to alert other parents to the dangers posed online asking that their child’s activity is heavily monitored.”
The mayor: “Solid advice.”
The PSNI has launched an investigation.
There has already been a stream of comments online about the incident, with parents warning each other about the incident.
“We need reminded that no child should be allowed access to the internet which isn’t monitored, especially young children,” said one mum.
Another insisted: “I’ve heard people say they need privacy – it’s utter rubbish. You have to monitor. I found my daughter was being bullied on social media and would never have known if I hadn’t checked her iPod. Parents need to wise up. Well done to that family; they stopped something awful happening.”
