Social Development Minister, Mervyn Storey MLA, has announced the start of work on a £95,000 Public Realm scheme at Whittaker Street in Derry.
The project will upgrade the surface of the footway beside the Guildhall and the Peace Park to include improved disabled access. The carriageway will also be resurfaced.
Acknowledging the impact the improvements will have on the area, Minister Storey said: “The Public Realm improvements already completed in the City Centre, particularly those at Guildhall Square and Waterloo Place, have been widely welcomed. This scheme is a natural extension to those improvements.
“Whittaker Street provides an important link between the City Centre and the Peace Bridge and, as such, is a key area for improved disabled access for residents and visitors alike. This further investment continues the ongoing commitment by my Department to the regeneration of this historic City.”
The project has been designed and will be delivered by Transport NI. Work commenced in January and will be completed by the end of March 2015.
Regional Development Minister Danny Kennedy said. “These major public realm schemes, which are carried out by my Department, have helped to regenerate the City in recent years and create more inviting and accessible public spaces.”
