FEARS FOR JOBS AS TESCO INTRODUCE SELF-SCAN SHOPPING TO DERRY

tesco scanTROUBLED supermarket giant Tesco has introduced self-scan shopping in Derry – insisting it won’t affect staffing levels.

However with more and more shoppers being offered the latest way to shop, some staff believe it is only a matter of time before the supermarket does cut back.

When the technology was introduced in other stores two years ago a Tesco spokesman insisted it was for shopper convenience and staff who would have been on tills are simply being re-directed to assist self-scan shoppers.

However some staff in Lisnagelvin fear the worst.

“It’s modern technology and it is about giving customers another choice but if it was very popular there will be fewer people on the tills,” said one staff member.

“They might not have considered that a couple of years ago but with all the cutbacks at Tesco in Britain, we’d fear this is the start of cuts.”

Tesco has already cancelled plans for an expansion of its Derry stores.

It is now at the centre of a major investigation over how it treats its suppliers in Britain.
