The fantastic six-foot Manannán Mac Lir statue that was callously stolen by a gang of thieves is set to be replaced following a meeting of the Limavady Town Council.
Local councillors in Limavady voted overwhelmingly to have the statue replaced.
The Celtic sea god statue was stolen from the Binevenagh Mountain, just outside Limavady last month.
The Manannán Mac Lir statue was created by John Sutton, who has worked on the hugely successful Game of Thrones TV show.
During the meeting last night, representatives of the Limavady Borough Council voted to replace the statue with a new sculpture.
There hoping they can replace it with a statue as similar to the original as possible.
The council now plans to approach the artist who sculpted Manannán Mac Lir to find out the cost for a replacement.
Representatives also raised the issue of making it more difficult to steal to rule out the possibility of thieves striking again.
Councillors also agreed to set up a fund to allow members of the public to make donations towards the cost of the reinstatement.
‘Paganistic’Manannán Mac Lir is a sea god from Irish mythology and the statue had become a popular tourist attraction in the area.
Its disappearance remains a complete mystery to police investigating the matter, but officers believe there could well be a religious motive behind the theft.
Those who cut down the statue left a small wooden cross in its place, bearing the words ‘You shall have no other gods before me’.
