A specially created structure to highlight the culture of bonfire burning in the North will go up in smoke as part of a community art project.
Following the success of last year’s Lumiere Derry-Londonderry, creative producers Artichoke will bring Burning Man artist David Best to Northern Ireland next month.
Together with people across Derry, he’ll build a beautiful shared structure that will soar high above the city before it is ceremonially burnt.
The ‘Temple’ project turns traditional associations with bonfire burning in the North on its head.
On the other side of the Atlantic, in the heart of the Nevada desert, fire is the centre of a festival that celebrates the spirit of community, art and freedom of expression.
Temple aims to bring together the artist at the centre of the USA’s Burning Man Festival, David Best, and the people of Derry-Londonderry.
Each year at Burning Man a ‘temple’ is built: it’s the spiritual heart of the festival, a place for remembrance and letting go.
Over the course of the event the structures inner walls are covered with letters and mementos, and at the end of the week everything is set alight in a special ceremony, releasing its messages of hope into the sky.
David Best and his crew have built eight ‘temples’ at Burning Man, including this year’s Temple of Grace.
Working with the local community in Derry, Artichoke will bring David and his crew to build a structure that will tower over the city, uniting everyone in a huge collaborative effort, in the creation of a temporary shared space that will be burned in March 2015.
Temple will be built by the people of Derry themselves.
Working with partners including the Nerve Centre, the Department for Employment and Learning and the Waterside Neighbourhood Partnership, there will be opportunities for people to learn new skills through apprenticeships, a back-to-work scheme and voluntary training opportunities.
Young people will be trained to use Computer Aided Design (CAD) at the Nerve Centre’s Fablab in Derry to cut the temple’s intricate panels.
Further training in local schools will also take place with students as part of their ICT classes, and a team of unemployed builders will have the chance to join a back-to-work scheme to help with the construction of the temple.
Young people not in education, employment or training that are part of Derry City Council Youth Employment Scheme will gain skills as they help raise and complete the structure.
We’re seeking Project Trainees and other volunteers to join our team for Temple, a large-scale temporary artwork by David Best to be produced in Derry-Londonderry in February and March 2015.
Through an extensive community engagement programme, Temple will be built and raised by over 100 individuals drawn from communities across the city.
Once completed in March 2015, it will open for the general public to visit and leave their offerings as testimonies of personal and collective stories.
After a period of public exhibition, the structure will be ceremonially burned in a spectacular finale.
As part of the Temple project, Artichoke are recruiting Project Trainees, and other voluntary roles for the project:
During a 4‐6 week Work Experience placement, Project Trainees will work alongside the artist’s team to raise and complete Temple.
These individuals will play a key role in the project – working with Site Crew, the Artists team and Builders to construct the artwork onsite and assist with the site restoration.
The placements are designed to provide unemployed individuals an opportunity for training and development, including:
· working in a team
· using initiative
· problem solving
· planning and organising
· communication and interpersonal skills
· creative design and construction skills
To apply you don’t need any previous skills, qualifications or experience.
