SDLP Foyle MLA, Pat Ramsey, has asked people to be on their guard against a dangerous drug in circulation in the Derry area.
The Public Health Agency has issued a warning about a new MDMA ecstasy that has caused a number of people to be hospitalised in England, as revealed by Derry Daily earlier.
He said: “It is vital that everyone but particularly young people are on guard for a new drug now in circulation in Northern Ireland. Police have seized large quantities of MDMA that have been linked to a number of hospitalisations in England.
“Tablets sold as ecstasy or MDMA can contain a number of other toxic ingredients. It is impossible to predict how they could affect or harm an individual as you cannot be certain what they are laced with
.
“You can identify these new dangerous drugs by the UPS logo design they carry. They have been cited as the cause of heatstroke, water intoxication and heart failure.
“In the wake of a number of ecstasy related deaths last year, the public must be aware that taking unidentified tablets is not a case of harmless fun.”
