N IRELAND soccer boss Michael O’Neill says Rangers fans should be very happy that Eglinton player Shane Ferguson has signed for them.
Ferguson was one of five Newcastle players sent on loan to Glasgow until the end of the season.
Magpies owner and Rangers shareholder Mike Ashley has a keen interest in both clubs, and appears to have brokered a surprise deal to send players up to Ibrox.
Defenders Kevin Mbabu and Remie Streete, midfielder Gael Bigirimana and forward Haris Vuckic all arrived in Glasgow last week, as did Northern Ireland international Shane.
The left sided player, who regularly features at full back or as a winger, and spent around 18 months on loan with Birmingham City, impressing under Lee Clark.
The 23-year-old, who joined Newcastle from Derry City back in 2007, has also made 18 appearances for the Northern Ireland national team, becoming a trusted player under manager Michael O’Neill.
O’Neill is obviously familiar with Ferguson’s abilities, and told the Daily Record that Rangers have made a ‘great signing’ in Ferguson.
“He has played against some really good players at international level. While he doesn’t have a lot of experience at club level he has experience at international level that will make him capable of dealing with anything that might be throw at him at Rangers,” said O’Neill.
“One of the great things about him is the versatility he gives you. He has potential to add goals to his game and he’ll be a great signing for them,” he added.
