People who have been forced to leave their homes on the Currynierin estate are unlikely to be able to return tonight.
A number of householders were forced to evacuate the area because of a security alert.
Police remain at the scene of the security alert which began earlier today.
Army explosive experts have been tasked to the scene following a claim that an explosive device has been left in the area.
Chief Inspector Tony Callaghan, the Foyle Area Commander, said: “It is unlikely that the people who have been asked to leave their home at Conway Park will be able to return tonight. We have also had to close off access between Ardmore Road and other parts of the Currynierin Estate.
“We regret any inconvenience that has been caused to local people, however, the priority in this operation is to keep people safe.”
