CHILDREN went on a crime spree rampage through Derry at the weekend AND most were primary school pupils, Derry Daily has learned.
Some were aged just nine and 10 and were left to roam the streets by parents.
We understand that the parents of some of the children shrugged off incidents which included vandalising life-saving equipment on the Peace Bridge and throwing it into the Foyle.
Other incidents included starting fires and theft. Police also seized two scramblers and were attacked by stone-throwing youths in other incidents – putting three patrol vehicles out of action.
Alcohol and drugs were also seized from school children.
PSNI city centre police have already expressed shock at the ages of the children involved in the Peace Bridge and fire incidents.
Fire crews were called to douse the flames of fires, some set off in rubbish bins.
“This weekend officers from the City North Neighbourhood Police Team also seized two uninsured scramblers which were being driven recklessly around the Northern estates putting themselves, pedestrians and other road users in danger. We also made 2 drug seizures and seized alcohol from underage youths,” said a PSNI Foyle spokesman.
“We did this despite three of our Police vehicles being damaged by youths throwing bricks, bottles and stones at us whilst we are out doing our jobs. Our communities are our priority and we will continue to patrol and work towards tackling crime and anti social behaviour.”
The city is still in shock from the incidents in the city centre on Saturday.
“They were like sewer rats running through the city and wrecking all around them,” said one shocked eye-witness.
“I couldn’t believe my eyes because some of them were so small yet they didn’t seem to care.”
