BURGLARS are ‘rampant’ across Derry with the PSNI confirming today its officers are investigating multiple break-ins.
Strand Road detectives are asking residents of the city to increase their vigilance against burglars.
Detective Chief Inspector James Mullen said that over weekend, police received reports of nine burglaries and attempted burglaries in the city.
“It is our belief that a number of these were carried out by the same offenders. In several of the incidents, entry was forced through the rear door of houses,” he told Derry Daily.
“We also suspect that some offenders are visiting areas in the days before they strike and using this as an opportunity to check out potential targets.”
Police made three arrests in relation to one incident and two men and a woman appeared in court on Monday.
However, enquiries are continuing into the other incidents, D/C/I Mullen said.
Between Friday night and Monday morning, domestic burglaries were reported at Templegrove (Ballymagroarty); Northland Avenue; Old Fort (Strathfoyle); Caw Hill Park (Kilfennan); Stoney Wood (Prehen); Rockmills (Strand Road); and Brook Hill (Shantallow).
Cash and items of jewellery were among the items stolen and in some cases police believe the burglars spent some time inside the targeted premises.
D/C/I Mullen added: “We are seeking the assistance of local people in investigating the incidents.
“It is also important for us to receive information about the type of suspicious movements that may be preparations for a burglary. This may include unknown vehicles or strangers paying close attention to houses. If you see a suspicious person or car in your area and they look out of place please telephone the police.
“This information can be given on the police non-emergency number 101 or to Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
