SDLP Foyle MP Mark Durkan has welcomed clarification from the Chief Executive of NI Water regarding the low levels of water at Killea reservoir in Derry and the impact this could have on wildlife in the area.
Mr Durkan said: “I was contacted by a concerned constituent who had noticed a significant drop in water levels at the Killea reservoir which is on their doorstep.
“The constituent was concerned about the impact this would have on wildlife in this part of Derry.
“I made representations to NI Water. The Chief Executive Sara Venning has replied explaining that their contractor had to drain the reservoir to carry out essential maintenance and safety work which was deemed necessary by a ‘Dam inspections regime’.
“She has also stated that a drop in water levels should not adversely affect local wildlife in the area and that the dam at the reservoir should return to normal levels by the end of April 2015.”
