DECLAN FOLEY was the Derry hero as the county’s hurlers were pushed all the way for a 2-15 to 3-10 win over Westmeath at Owenbeg.
A late Foley goal earned victory for the hosts in a tight encounter, as the Oak Leafers claimed victory over the Midlanders for the second year in a row.
Derry led by 1-09 to 1-06 at half-time, with Alan Grant netting their goal.
The hosts moved five points clear on the restart, but Westmeath never gave up, with Niall Dowdall registering their second goal.
A brace of Brendan Murtagh frees levelled the game in the 53rd minute, with an Alan Devine goal helping Westmeath to a late lead, only for Foley to rescue the league points for the hosts at the death.
Elsewhere a hat-trick of goals in the first ten minutes helped Carlow to a comfortable 3-12 to 0-07 win over London in Ruislip.
Kerry never trailed as they claimed a 2-20 to 1-06 win over 13-man Wicklow in Arklow.
