GAELIC FOOTBALL friends of a Derry woman fighting for her life in an Indonesian hospital have asked for prayers for her recovery.
Lisa Orsi, a 22-year-old physiotherapist from the Waterside, is based in Singapore and had flown to East Java for a trekking holiday.
Her uncle Peter, from Letterkenny, said Lisa had been the victim of a “one in a million” medical condition whilst walking near a volcano.
“What we understand is that she took a bad reaction up there which caused her sinuses to swell which blocked the flow of oxygen to her brain,” he said.
“She collapsed later in her bedroom after taking a shower. She couldn’t breathe properly and this is what caused the damage. The doctors have said this is a one in a million freak accident. We are in shock. We cannot believe it.
“This has affected her family and the community across Derry and Donegal,” he added.
The Singapore Gaelic Lions, the team Lisa plays for, also released a statement.
“We know a lot of people have been wondering about Lisa’s condition today. We have waited until now to update everyone as we wanted to ensure that Lisa’s family were updated on her condition first. They are with Lisa at present,” said the club.
“Unfortunately Lisa’s condition isn’t good. She has sustained severe brain damage as a result of a period of hypoxia and she is still in a coma in ICU. We and the family are confident that Lisa is receiving the necessary care as we have been communicating with doctors in Singapore.
“The possibility of a transfer to Singapore has been explored. However based on the opinion of doctors in Singapore and Indonesia it has been decided that Lisa will remain in Indonesia to receive care at present.
“Everyone here and Lisa’s family appreciate all your support. For now we hope and pray for Lisa.
“Lisa’s family would like to extend their thanks to everyone for all of your kind words and support.”
