SDLP FOYLE MP Mark Durkan has welcomed today’s announcement by leading IT company Kainos that they are to create 30 new jobs in Derry is a “welcome boost for the local economy.”
The Belfast-based IT firm has announced a major expansion that will create 403 new jobs.
The company currently employs more than 550 people in the North, the UK and Poland.
And a huge boost for Derry is that 30 of those jobs are coming to the city over the next year as part of the firm’s expansion plans.
Kainos say the jobs will pay salaries of £30,000 a year.
First and deputy first ministers Peter Robinson and Martin McGuinness were at the announcement along with Kainos MD Brendan Mooney and Enterprise Minister Arlene Foster.
Kanios has been growing rapidly in recent years helped by a series of big contract wins in the public sector.
Its patient records software is used in around 70 hospitals in England and Wales.
In the year to March 2014 turnover grew by 45% to £43m while pre-tax profits more than doubled to £8 million.
The company was founded almost 30 years ago partly as a spin-out from Queen’s University.
The university still holds a major stake in the company.
Said Mark Durkan MP: “This announcement today serves to confirm Kainos are very impressed with the calibre and performance of their existing workforce in Derry.
“This expansion underlines the competitiveness of Derry as a location for investment.
“But we also need to do more to enhance job capacity in the city – including the traction that a City Deal could provide,” added the former SDLP leader.
Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness said: “Today is just the latest chapter in the Kainos success story.
“I congratulate Kainos for this investment with the new jobs contributing £12.4m annually in salaries to the local economy.”
