Derry City Council has called on the Western Trust to safeguard vital services delivered via community organisations to older people and the most vulnerable in society.
The council backed a motion tabled by SDLP Councillor Brian Tierney expressing ‘concern’ over the impact that cuts imposed on the Western Trust will have on services such as meals on wheels and day care.
The motion also called for full consultation with community partners and stakeholder ahead of any proposals on the future of ‘vital community services’.
Cllr Tierney said the importance of such services cannot be underestimated.
He said: “Crucial services such as the Community Meals Service (better known as meals on wheels), day care services, sitting services (to allow carers to get a break) and lunching clubs for older people are vital to many in our city.
“There are more than 20 local community organisations across the rural and urban areas of our council area which work in conjunction with the Western Trust to deliver essential services for our older people and vulnerable members of the community.
“Improper budget management by the Department of Health and the failure to fully resource the reforms in Transforming Your Care cannot be allowed to result in the punishment of older people and the most vulnerable in our society
“It is imperative that groups such as the Red Cross, Age Concern, Carnhill Resource Centre and Strabane Day Care are given the support needed to continue the delivery of these valuable services.
“Every effort must be made by the Western Trust to not only protect but to enhance these services.
“I am glad that my council colleagues have agreed to speak with one voice on this and back this move to ensure we do all we can to help ensure the needs of some of the most vulnerable people in our area are fully provided for.”
