A PEDESTRIAN is lucky to be alive after being hit by car thieves in the latest sickening incident of so-called ‘joyriding’ in Derry.
The man was struck as he crossed the road at Stanley Walk in the Bogside.
He was rushed to Altnagelvin hospital where he was treated for multiple injuries including a broken leg.
Police at Strand Road are investigating the incident.
However local people say the victim could have been killed – and there is anger at the nature of the hit-and-run incident.
“The area has been plagued by speeding car thieves for weeks and we warned that something like this would happen,” said one resident today.
“You’re taking your life in your hands and it’s not just at night either; this happens in broad daylight all the time.”
The incident follows complaints last month after car thieves struck a roundabout during the school run at 4pm.
