NO-ONE has given Derry City a chance before a ball had been kicked – but Peter Hutton’s side ground out all the points in Galway this evening.
City came from behind to spoil Galway United’s return to the SSE Airtricity Premier Division at Eamonn Deacy Park.
Samuel Oji’s opener was cancelled out by goals from Sean Houston and Ryan Curran.
Both sides took a while to get into their stride as they endured a scrappy opening 15 minute spell, but the tie soon livened up as the first half wore on.
New signing Samuel Oji scored from a corner in the 19th minute to give the home fans some voice – and hopes of a home win.
As they tried to add to the score, City keeper Ger Doherty kept out a number of efforts as the Candystripes held on.
So whatever Peter Hutton said to the Derry men at half-time certainly seemed to work.
City played full-on attacking football after the break and were rewarded in the 58th minute when Sean Houston pounced to level matters.
Hutton’s men weren’t happy with that though and besieged the Galway goal for much of the next 20 minutes and Ryan Curran put City 2-1 up with 10 minutes left.
Galway may struggle this year, but all credit to Peter Hutton for good victory on the road.
