A STRABANE man has cheated going to jail for illegally burning waste.
Colm Lafferty (42) was handed down a three month sentence suspended for 12 months at Strabane Magistrates’ Court on each of three environmental offences relating to the burning of waste.
The court heard that on 23 July 2013, officers of Strabane District Council were attending a site of illegal dumping at Fyfin Road, Strabane when they observed Mr Lafferty set fire to waste which included plasterboard, paper, treated wood, paint pots and plastic drink bottles.
The NI Environment Agency said: “Further investigation by our officers confirmed that Mr Lafferty had failed to produce any Waste Transfer Documentation (as required under law) for the transfer of waste, a fundamental requirement for any business transporting waste.”
