Derry are fighting for their lives in Division One after a five-point defeat to Monaghan, with more referee decisions to be questioned (yet again).
Brian McIver must think the whole world is against him and his team right now, with every dodgy decision going the other way.
Dreadful decisions against the Oak Leafers in games against Kerry, Mayo and Tyrone were followed with one of the most yet.
This time a perfectly good goal was disallowed, a goal which might have secured more than Derry got out if this one.
Derry started the better and opened the scoring with a point by Emmet McGuckin in the second minute and they re-took the lead again in the 10th minute through Benny Heron after Fintan Kelly had opened Monaghan’s account in the fourth minute.
Monaghan wasted chances, so Derry trailed by just three points at the break – 0-08 to 0-05.
Monaghan edged further into the lead after the re-start but a dogged Derry stayed in touch, two points off the pace.
The hosts went five points clear through Paul Finlay and Conor McManus before Mark Lynch pulled a score back.
Emmet McGuckin palmed the ball to the Monaghan net and turned to celebrated – but the referee ruled out. No-one knows why….no-one appears to know why right now.
So instead of being a point behind, Derry trailed by four and as the heads dropped Monaghan added two more scores, with Lynch reducing the deficit at the end to five: Monaghan 0-15, Derry 0-10.
