THE family of Derry woman Sorcha Glenn has thanked the public for supporting a petition in her name – which might now change the rules on early cervical smear tests.
Sorcha died last October from cancer.
She had been refused a smear test because she was under 25, having sought one because a history of the illness in her family. She was just 23 when she died in the arms of her boyfriend Matt.
A petition online has passed the 100,000 mark – meaning it will now be debated by MPs including local MP Mark Durkan. More than 111,000 people have now signed the petition.
Her sister Orlagh said: “There was a time that we were stuck for a few weeks. We were hovering around 60,000 signatures and we thought were we ever going to get there.
“This weekend it has just absolutely taken off. We’re so thankful to everyone who has got on board. I couldn’t thank people enough, it’s amazing.”
The petition will now be considered for debate by the Backbench Business Committee, to decide if it should be debated in the House of Commons.
“It is now out of our hands in a certain respect, it is up to the politicians to bring it forward,” said Orlagh.
