Police have confirmed a large number of speed detection operations are underway in the North West.
It follows an increase in traffic officer patrols.
The PSNI in the Derry City and Strabane District say the operations are part of a Europe-wide speed detection campaign this week.
That means there will be a concerted focus on speeding motorists over the next week, said the PSNI.
“It is a staggering fact that across Europe in 2013, 3,000 people were killed or seriously injured in crashes where speed was a factor,” said police in a statement.
If drivers slowed down on average by only 1km/h, about 1,300 road deaths per year could be prevented.
It’s understood police have stopped dozens of vehicles across the North West in the past 24 hours with motorists facing fines and court appearances as a result.
However police are keen to stress the clampdown this week is not about punishment – it’s about saving lives.
