A CROOK pretending to be a charity collector for the British Heart Foundation has been arrested after a PSNI operation
City Centre police arrested the woman after she was found to be fraudulently collecting in the city centre for the well known charity.
She was interviewed and charged to court for fraud.
The same woman had been spotted at various locations around Derry in recent days.
Police observed her on a number of occasions before making the arrest after the charity confirmed no-one had been authorised to collect for them.
Money was also seized during the operation.
Police are expected to ask the courts to direct the cash to the charity which was being ripped off.
A PSNI spokesman said: “Official collectors should carry accredited identification and paperwork which they are be able to produce.
“If you see any similar suspicious behaviour please call Police on 101.
“It is sad but, unfortunately, there are people out there who will pretend to be collecting for a charity but keep the money for themselves.
“This harms the charity, the confidence of those donating, and those who give up their own time to genuinely collect for a good cause.”
