POLICE IN DERRY LAUNCH ‘DRINK THINK PARTNERSHIP’ CAMPAIGN

Derry booze night outPOLICE are warning revellers in Derry of getting involved in a drink-fuelled fracas can have all sorts of consequences.

Chief Inspector Tony Callaghan said today: “For a victim, it can result in life-changing injuries.

“For a perpetrator, the consequences could also be long lasting.

“A criminal conviction can be a barrier to a desired career – it could also affect plans to travel or emigrate.

“For these reasons we are pleased, along with the Policing and Community Safety Partnership, to support the Drink Think Partnership in a new campaign.

“It involves using posters and billboards to spell out the message. They feature a man called “John” who has found that a conviction for assault means he cannot travel to Australia. (The USA also has a very tough policy on admitting people with convictions).

“The Drink Think Project offers an education programme for first time offenders of alcohol-related crimes.

“The hope is to reduce re-offending and increase knowledge around alcohol. The Project team can be contacted on 7136 3925.”
