THERE is growing anger over the cover-up continuing to take place over the murder of a much-loved Co Derry GAA official.
Sinn Féin MLA Gerry Kelly has said the inquest into the killing of Bellaghy’s Sean Brown in 1997 raises further alarming facts about the original RUC investigation.
Mr Kelly said: ”At the inquest it was revealed that a key piece of evidence had been withheld from the initial investigation following the sectarian murder of Mr Brown by loyalists in 1997.
“A file relating to the case had been marked ‘NDD’, meaning not for downward distribution, by a senior RUC detective in an attempt to keep the information away from those involved in the so-called investigation.
“This highlights the alarming attempt by senior RUC figures to hamper and frustrate the investigation from the outset.
“This revelation comes after years of delays and the failure of the PSNI to hand over files to the coroner.
“All of this adds to the pain and suffering of the Brown family who have already had to wait 17 years to find out exactly what happened to Sean.
“Sinn Féin will continue to support the Brown family and others in their campaign for truth and justice.”
Mr Brown was well known and well liked throughout the county; his death angered and hurt his friend the poet Seamus Heaney.
