DETECTIVES are hunting arsonists who tried to torch a house in Derry with a 70-year-old woman inside.
There is anger in the city after police who went to help the woman were attacked by stone-throwing young thugs.
Petrol was poured through the letterbox of the house at Camelia Court and set on fire shortly before 6pm.
The pensioner was able to extinguish the fire, which caused scorch damage to the door of the property.
The PSNI say officers were attacked as they responded to the incident.
Sergeant Joe George said: “While in attendance, youths threw a number of missiles at police. The rear windscreen of a police vehicle was smashed as a result.
“A motive for this incident has yet to be established and I would appeal to any witnesses or anyone with any information to contact Police at Strand Road on the non-emergency number 101.”
Information can also be passed anonymously via the Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111.
The incident is the latest in a string of attacks in the city – with out of control teens running amok through communities.
