A Sinn Fein MLA has taken a pot shot at the SDLP ‘s Foyle MP Mark Durkan over the birth of Prince William’s baby girl yesterday.
Phil Flanagan tweeted this morning: “Missed/avoided #RoyalBaby coverage yesterday.
“Another heir/successor for #SDLP MPs to pledge allegiance to.”
The tweet ends with link to a YouTube video of Mark Durkan swearing allegiance to the Queen when he first took his seat in the House of Commons.
But the SDLP have hit back at the Sinn Fein MLA.
It posted a picture of Martin McGuinness shaking hands with the Queen during a Royal visit.
In a tweet from #SDLP youth, the party said: “What do you reckon Marty was saying here Phil?
“Doesn’t look like he was demanding a British withdrawal.”
The social media spat comes as the parties gear up for the final days in the hustings before voters go to the polls on Thursday to elect their new MPs.
Sinn Fein are looking to retain their current five Westminster seats and possibly make inroads into other constituencies.
The SDLP are hoping to retain its three MPs with Mark Durkan favourite to be returned as Foyle MP.
