Former Derry City and Carlisle United defender Darren Kelly remains undeterred from the job at Oldham Athletic FC despite receiving death threats.
The joy of being appointed Oldham Athletic manager was quickly distinguished following the revelation of a tweet he had sent controversial former IRA commander Martin McGuinness.
Just days following his appointment a tweet Kelly had sent McGuinness months previous was brought into the public domain which sparked fury among Oldham supporters.
Lactics supporters were left disgusted at Kelly’s tweet in which he described McGuiness as a ‘legend’.
Fans claimed the tweet showed he was a supporter of the IRA and demanded the board to remove him from the position immediately.
Former British Army servicemen who were supporters of the club expressed their disgust at the appointment and said they would never support the club again.
Amid the furore over the appointment Kelly then received a sinister death threat.
Despite all the controversy, Kelly remains undeterred from the job in hand and has the full backing of the club’s board.
Club director Anthony Kee said, ““If Darren’s good, we’ll do everything in our power to keep him,” said Gee.
“We didn’t want, and Oldham don’t necessarily need, a tried and tested manager who’s out of work and looking to get back in the game, using our club as maybe a six to 10 game stepping stone.
“We’re going to get a level of commitment from Darren we wouldn’t get from that type of manager.
