THEY say a week is a long time in politics but a week is just as long in football.
And it is even longer for a Derry City manager hit with injury after injury and with a section of Candystripe fans on his back.
But Derry City manager Peter Hutton is trying to stay positive with a depleted squad and matches and results going against him and his team.
Captain Ryan McBride will miss the SSE Airtricity Premier Division game against Sligo Rovers at the Brandywell tomorrow night, Friday, May 22, at 7.45 pm.
McBride could be on the physio’s table for three weeks with the injury.
Gerard Doherty has a back injury and Philip Lowry is has knee trouble and both are rated doubtful.
The Candystripes have won just one of their last eight matches.
“It’s been tough – I understand the criticism and disappointment,” said Derry manager Peter Hutton.
City have slipped to eighth in the league while they made their EA Sports Cup exit on Tuesday night with a 1-0 defeat by Shamrock Rovers.
But it is a big match for Derry as Sligo are breathing down their necks in ninth place with just two points behind.
The task is even more daunting with Patrick McEleney and Stephen Dooley remain out with injuries.
The manager believes the absence of key players has led to the poor run.
“There is no-one more frustrated that myself, but we have not been able to deal with a full deck of cards yet and it’s really impacted on our squad,” he added.
